Stress and Adrenal Dysfunction - Let's break the cycle!

Isn’t our body just friggin’ amazing? It’s constantly battling to keep us alive, no matter what curve ball we throw it’s way. Naturally though, long term, we can see detrimental affects on our health when we are not fueling our body with the thoughts, nutrients and lifestyle choices it really needs to thrive. Which leads me into one of my all time favorite topics – the impact of Stress on the body, in particular Adrenal Dysfunction!


When I say “stress” I’m referring to anything that activates the bodies biochemical Stress response – that can be mental, physical or emotional triggers, or a deadly combination of all three!


Stress triggers the release of a couple of really important hormones – Cortisol and Adrenaline. They are responsible for the fight or flight response. They wake you up, get your heart racing, boost your energy and increase your mental awareness within a second, which sounds great right? But when these hormones are consistently pumping through your body over a long period of time, that’s when we have issues. One being Adrenal Dysfunction - which can feel a lot like BURNOUT!


THE LOW DOWN ON ADRENAL DYSFUNCTION

Are you one of those people that is tired and wired all at once? It seems bizarre that you can be so physically and mentally exhausted but still over thinking, worrying and feel ‘switched on’, right!

There’s science behind it all, so let me give you a bit of an overview…


Stress activates the cascade affect of the HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal cortex), which triggers the release of Cortisol and Adrenaline. Through negative feedback the pituitary and adrenal cortex are told one of two things –

a) “WOAH that’s enough stress hormone for now, we are good! Let’s not release any more”, or

b) “Hey, sh*t’s still crazy and we are going to need a little more of those hormones to keep this chick going”.


Option a) is ideal (unless your life is under threat), but the truth is, because of our lifestyle choices, perceptions of stressful situations and constant desire to be this ‘perfect human’ (as if there is such a thing), a lot of women are consistently sitting in that option b) feedback loop.


Until eventually, Adrenal Dysfunction becomes their reality.


When this happens, our hormone pathway is essentially dis-regulated.

We might experience peaks of stress hormones just as we lay down to go to bed, keeping us up half the night, over thinking every possible detail of life.

We might experience lows of these hormones first thing in the morning, when they’re naturally meant to rise and kick start your day, making getting out of bed the biggest challenge on earth.

Or we may even see chronically low levels of these hormones consistently, leaving you feeling “flat” 24/7.
